Juan Wang
Chengdu, Sichuan Provence, China
Juan Wang, began her piano studies at the age of five in her native
China. In 1993, she entered the Middle School of the Sichuan
Conservatory of Music on full scholarship, studying with Professors Dan
Zhaoyi and Li Xiumei. Juan won 2nd prize in the Sichuan Youth Piano
Competition in 1991 and 3rd prize in the Zhu Jiang Cup National Piano
Competition in 1997. In the same year, she was awarded the Honorable
Mention in the First Chinese Pieces Piano Competition in Hong Kong. In
1998, she appeared as a soloist with Sichuan Youth Orchestra. In 1999,
she was selected to take part in the Second International Piano
Competition in Beijing; meanwhile, she received the highest marks for
pianists and was recommended to the Piano Department at the Sichuan
Conservatory of Music.
Juan’s first visit to Canada was when she was selected to
participate in the Morningside Music Bridge International Summer
Workshop in Calgary – a privilege repeated three times. In 2001, she
moved to Calgary to further her musical studies at Mount Royal College
on full scholarship, studying with Hung-Kuan Chen and Tema Blackstone.
She has been a constant prize winner in Kiwanis Music festival. In
2003, Juan won 1st prize in the Calgary Youth Orchestra Concerto
competition and performed as a soloist with the orchestra in April
2003. CBC made a recording of her 1st prize-winning performance at the
2003 Calgary Kiwanis Festival Mozart Competition.
Juan Wang has performed contemporary works and chamber music, often
in the community. In September 2003, she moved to Vancouver to pursue
her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance with Lee Kum-Sing at the
Vancouver Academy of Music. She was the recipient of the Betsy B.
Walker Memorial Scholarship in 2003 and Alex Drennan Scholarship in
2004. She has been selected to take part in the 10th Pacific
International Piano competition in Vancouver in 2004. And also, she was
the prize winner of the 28th Annual Kay Meek Scholarship Competition at
Vancouver Academy of Music. During the summer of 2004, She was invited
to take part in the Casalmaggiore International Festival Summer Music
in Italy. She was also selected to take part in the Margess
International Summer Workshop in Switzerland on full scholarship. She
has appeared throughout Switzerland as both a soloist and chamber
musician, including performance in Zurich, Geneva, Seoul, Bern, Luzern,
Lausanne, St.Moritz and Zuoz. Most recently, she has been awarded Mrs.
Cheng-koon (S.K.) Lee scholarship in October 2004. She performed as a
soloist with orchestra in May 2005 at Orpheum Theatre.
