Susan BoettgerPianist Susan Boettger is an avid performer and composer of modern and cross-cultural music. An advocate for the arts and education, she founded and maintains a music studio in Orange County, California (www.pianoedge.com) in which she and her colleagues teach piano, chamber music, and composition. Although her interest is intensely modern, her elbows and fists rarely touch the keyboard: “Music has to make sense and it has to be accessible for the audience.” Her desire is to bridge the gulf that lies between classic music lovers and modern composers. Having graduated with her bachelor’s degree in music from Rice University, she took her master’s at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she won the Juilliard School's Contemporary Piano Competition and premiered solo works for the New Juilliard Ensemble in the Julliard Theatre and Alice Tully Hall. She has performed with symphony orchestras, including the Pasadena, Ventura, and Orange County Chamber Orchestra. Susan’s choral suite, Just a Boy, depicts the life of a young Arab boy with sounds and texts of the Middle East. She collaborated in composing two new musicals, and, with Judge Jim Gray of Orange County, she arranged a modern patriotic musical, Americans All, for the high school stage. In collaboration with Sonja Karlsen, opera singer and poet, she arranged the opera Bernadette, the true story of the saint of Lourdes, France. The Twin Cities Concert Series in Grass Valley in northern California premiered her art songs for soprano and piano, and she has performed here with her mother, oboist Jane Boettger. Susan is continuing to pursue new sounds and trends as a doctoral candidate in composition and education at the University of Southern California under Morten Lauridsen, one of America’s great composers. At present, performance-wise, she’s excited by playing with her piano trio: “I love the ensemble, the excitement of accomplishing this sound together.” However, her candidacy for a PhD increasingly demands solo performance, and toward that end, she attended Gold Country Piano Institute in June, 2004 to study with master instructors Skrzypek, Lee, and del Rosario.
