Nevada City is located in Nevada County at heart of California's Mother Lode

Originally
called Deer Creek Dry Diggins, Nevada City is located in Nevada County,
along California's famous “Mother Lode.” Gold was first discovered in
the area by Europeans in 1842, and then again by Americans in 1848. The
frenzy that followed became known as the California Gold Rush, which
saw an estimated 90,000 aspiring “Forty-Niners” rush to the gold fields
of California to seek their fortunes.
Many of these miners were of Cornish descent. Experts at hardrock
mining, they came in droves from the English County of Cornwall to the
Gold Country, and left a mark on the area that is present to this day.
The Grass Valley City Council chambers feature an exhibit of Cornish
history and current ties to Cornwall. The miner's meal of Cornish
pasties is served in many local restaurants and, in the streets of
downtown Grass Valley, residents celebrate Cornish Christmas,
accompanying their pasties with performances by a Cornish choir and
bagpipers in kilts.
Nevada
City and neighboring Grass Valley offer today's visitors an entirely
different type of gold: an unparalleled cultural and recreational
environment. In addition to the Gold Country Piano Institute, the area
hosts an incredible variety of cultural institutions and events,
including the Music in the Mountains festivals, the Twin Cities Concert Association series, the Foothill Theater Company, the Wolf Mountain Bluegrass Festival, the Nevada City Concert Band, the California World Music Festival, Grass Valley's Center for the Arts, Pioneer Arts and many more.
Nevada County's surrounding Sierra Foothills also harbor an embarrassment of riches, from the historic Empire Mine
and several restored mining towns, to the miles of water canals
maintained by the Nevada Irrigation District, to the fabulous trails,
lakes and streams of the Tahoe National Forest.
