Filip Fak

Filip FakFilip Fak lives in Rijeka, Croatia and attends the Music Academy in Zagreb. He won 1st Prize in the national competition of HDGPP (if you’re fascinated by the music of languages heard by the ears of nonspeakers…one of the pleasures of GCPI…you’ll enjoy knowing that this stands for “Hrvatsko društvo glazbenih i plesnih pedagoga”); 1st prize and a special prize at the Competition "Ivan Zajc"; 1st Prize at the Lions Club Grand Prix; and other prizes including the 1st and a special prize in "Europe at school" Competition awarded by Council of Europe in Bruxelles in 1997. At 2004 GCPI he studied Chopin’s Sonata #3 in b minor, Liszt’s Après une lecture du Dante - Fantasia quasi sonata, and Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin.

Narrative sent to GCPI by Filip

I am 20 years old. I started to play the piano when I was 9, but I showed the interest for music much earlier. At age of 5 I started to play accordion and keyboard, and from the beginning I was also very interested in improvising and composing, so composition soon became my second big passion. My favorite composer is Johann Sebastian Bach, but I prefer to play music from romantic and modern periods, especially the music of Johannes Brahms.

Does my English really seem good? I'm glad to here that, because I didn't learn it at school... However, I learned much from my sister (she's the only one who speaks English in the closer family) and a little bit on my own, watching the TV and using the computer. I had to learn basic English very early because I participated on many piano courses in foreign countries. Also, I met some people with which I communicate in English regularly.

I have a sister, 24 years old. She is also very musical - she sings very nice, but she doesn't play any instruments. She studies economy; actually, she's preparing her final exam and considerating employment possibilities. She likes to read and her favorite author is Marija Juric-Zagorka (from Croatia) who wrote some great novels associated with the Croatian history at the time of the inquisition of witches (the Middle Age). She likes nature and from sports, rollerskateing. Another of her passions is cooking and making desserts.

I like to read, especially modern poetry (Baudelaire, Trakl), but I also read other fields of literature. Beside that, I'm very interested in philosophy, psychology and religion. My favorite author is Miroslav Krleza, modern Croatian writer whose valuable works are well known across the Europe. Although comprehensive and subtle artist, he was very rough critic of the contemporary government, society and limited thinking. He managed to create a very specific style, colored with irony and rather detailed realistic descriptions. Most of all I like his dramas and novels.

Much of my free time I spend with the computer. Except Internet and ordinary tasks, I use the computer to experiment with electronic and algorithmic music. Although I intensively trained soccer and basketball back in elementary and high school, now I do not have much time to do sports. I do some jogging and gymnastics every morning, and sometimes I go to the gym. Generally, I'm not very interested in science, but I was always fascinated with mathematics. Except that, I really love to travel, to see new places and to meet new people.

My favorite dinner? Chicken stuffed with cheese, ham and mushrooms. For breakfast I usually eat some kind of sandwich, sometimes cereals or fried eggs, but fruit and milk products are my favorite food in the morning, so I eat that every day. Although I like to eat very much, I'm a terrible cook. Unfortunately, from time to time I have to cook, so I try to do very simple meals (eggs, sausages, pasta, soups etc.). However, my family has some interesting recipes, I'll attach You one of my favorites.

The only thing I would like to add is that my great-grandfather was born, lived and died in United States, and also, I have many relatives across the country. I hope I will finally meet some of them while I'm there... Well, that's all for now. If you would like to know something else, just write!

Yours sincerely,
FILIP FAK
