Caitlin & Ian Wood

Ian and Caitlin Wood with Maki Noyama
Ian and Caitlin Wood with Maki Noyama

Here are notes from Caitlin and Ian Wood of Vancouver, Canada. They are both students of Lee Kum-Sing. Their notes are so similar and so revealingly different that they seem to belong together.

Caitlin Wood:

I am 10-yrs-old, and my birthday is on Valentine’s Day. I started learning piano and violin when I was 4. My favorite composers are Bach and Mozart. I try to practice every day after finishing my homework. Ian and I practice in different rooms so we can practice whenever we want. Ian and I both like music of Bach and Mozart the most. My favorite books are the Harry Potter series and The Lord of the Rings series. My favorite movie stars are Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom. My favorite Disney character is Piglet. I am only fluent in English, though I am learning French in school. I like math and I am studying Gr. 7-8 math in gr. 5. I like figure skating, swimming, soccer (though I may not play it), Ultimate Frisbee, Capture The Flag, cycling, running, reading, and playing computer games. Ian likes playing Nintendo more than me because he always beats me. My favorite dinner is lasagna. I like waffles for breakfast. My favorite recipe is my dad's clam chowder.

Caitlin's repertoire for study at GCPI:

J.S. Bach
Inventions No 11, 7 & 12
Sinfonia No 7, BWV.793
Mozart

Sonata in C Major K330
Concerto in G Major, K453, I: Allegro
Grieg

Butterfly, op. 43, No 1
Kabalevsky

Variations op. 40 No 1 in D Major

Ian Wood:

I am 12 yrs. old. I started piano at age 6, and violin at age 7. My favorite composers are Bach and Mozart. My sister and I share two pianos. One piano is in the living room and the other is in the family room. We just practice whenever we can find time to. For me it is usually after school and the school activities. On weekends, I practice more. Caitlin and I both like classical music, especially the music of Bach and Mozart. We are not from a musical family. My father is an automotive instructor and my mom is a Kinesiologist. They both learnt the piano when they were young but quit because they did not like it. Actually, my mom did not let me learn the piano when I asked for lessons at age three. However, I was allowed to play on my mom's old upright whenever I want, I even remember playing on it with my toes, my nose, and my bum, and made my parents laugh so hard. Finally, at 5 1/2, my wish to start piano lesson was finally granted. I like to read Lord of the Rings. My favorite author is J. R. R. Tolkein and Shakespheare. I do not speak anything else but English at home. At school I learn French and Latin. I like math. I am studying gr. 9 math in gr. 8 at school. I am in school's Mathcounts Provincial Team this year. I like swimming, figure skating, cross-country running, track and field, rowing, skiing, playing basketball and ultimate frisbee. I never try to cook. My favorite recipe is my dad's clam chowder because it has more bacon and clam than potato in it.

Ian's repertoire for study at GCPI:

J.S. Bach
Italian Concerto (1st Movement)
Weber

Sonata in C Major, op. 24, Rondo
Beethoven

Sonata, op. 14, No 2
Debussy

Arabesque No 1
Shubert
Impromptu in E flat Major, op. 90, No 2
Chopin
Valse, op. 64, No 1
Mendelssohn
Songs Without Words, op. 67, No 4

Concerto No 21 in C Major, K467
(with Ian’s own Cadenzas)
