What is the name of your city?
Singapore
How old are you?
13 years old
Do you have brothers and sisters? What ages?
A twin brother (13 yrs old) and a younger brother (10 yrs old)
Are they musical?
They both do not play any musical instrument, partly because they hate practicing. Like most boys, they are into sports.
It’s
interesting how many musicians have parents who aren’t musical. I have
often heard parents say, “Oh! I wish I had learned to play an
instrument!” So their children get lessons! Are your parents musical?
No.
How old were you when you began to learn to play the piano?
5 years old but I only started playing the piano seriously when I was about 9 or 10 years old
Do you play other instruments?
I just started learning the cello this year.
Who are your favorite composers?
I
like to play Mozart and Chopin and find the music of Bach very
stimulating and challenging to play. I love the harmonies and different
textures in Debussy and have come to enjoy the music of Haydn and Liszt
as I learn new repertoire. Shostakovich and Prokofiev are two of my
favourite 20th century composers.
I sometimes listen to pop
music, but not too much though, as it can get really trashy! My faves
are McFly, Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson and the music from Hillsong
Church in Australia.
What, other than music and those interests in life that everyone shares, interests you?
I
love watching movies, although with school and music, I hardly have any
time to go to the cinemas. I watch most of my movies on the inflight
entertainment on the SIA planes whenever I travel. My all time
favourites are the Lord of The Rings, Troy, Spiderman and Star Wars.
Do you like to read? What kind of literature?
I
love reading. I read whatever I can get my hands on. I have just
finished Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, The Curious Incident of The
Dog in the Midnight by Mark Haddon. I am now reading great Expectations
by Charles Dickens.
Do you play any sports?
I play badminton occasionally and jog with my twin whenever he can drag me up from bed on weekend mornings.
What are your favorite foods?
Laksa-a
Singapore dish. It is noodles with fish cakes, prawns and bean curd
skins in coconut milk curry. I usually make it spicier with a spoonful
of chilli sauce.
